Almost one in six UK run clubs has the words "run club" in its name, and nearly half name the town they run in. That comes from every name in the RunClub directory: the 3,876 UK clubs listed in September 2026. This guide uses that data to help you choose a run club name people remember, can find, and won't need to change in a year.
What are UK run clubs actually called?
Most UK clubs follow one formula: a place, then a word that means running. Of the 3,876 UK clubs in the RunClub directory, 612 use "run club", 591 use "runners" and 540 use "running club". The old athletics words are still everywhere, with 451 clubs using AC or athletic club and 281 calling themselves harriers.
Names can count in more than one row. We left out parkrun events, because organisers don't choose those names.

The last word tells you even more. 1,427 names end in "Club", 517 in "Runners" and 172 in "Harriers". The median name is three words long.
Traditional or new-wave: which naming style fits your club?
Pick the style that matches the club you actually run, because the name sets expectations before anyone reads your bio.
Traditional names use harriers, striders, AC, road runners or joggers. 948 clubs in the data (24.5%) are named this way, and they tend to signal structure: coached sessions, club vests, league races.
New-wave names use "run club", "collective", "social" or "society" with no traditional word attached. 701 clubs (18.1%) fit here. They read as social first: one route, coffee after, all paces welcome. Boldmere Bullets Running Collective, Mum Run Collective and The Heavy Leg Society are good examples.
Neither is better. Just don't mislead. Call yourselves harriers and people will expect intervals on a Tuesday. Call yourselves a social and the runner chasing a 10k PB may never turn up.
Should your run club name include your town?
Usually, yes. At least 1,897 of the UK clubs we analysed (48.9%) include their town or area, and that's a floor, because it misses clubs named after a river, hill or landmark.
The reason is findability. Search engines match words, so a club called, say, Norwich Tuesday Runners already contains half of what someone types when they want a run club in Norwich. Instagram search and directories work the same way.
The cost is personality. "Norwich Running Club" is easy to find and easy to forget. A pun sticks, but nobody searches for it. The best names do both: a pun plus the place. Chew Valley Snails, Troon Tortoises and Pershore Plum Plodders all carry their place in the name, and you'd remember each one after hearing it once.
Should you name your club after the cafe or pub you meet at?
It can work, if you go in knowing the risk. It's a small cluster: 14 names in the data mention coffee, a cafe or a brew, and 9 mention a pub, beer or a brewery. Examples include Mosaic Brew Run Club in Coventry, Ale Hub Run Club Warwick, Oath Coffee Run Social in Shrewsbury, Coffee & Kicks Run Club in Falmouth and the gloriously literal Irthlingborough Run To The Pub Club.
The upside is real. You get an identity on day one, and the venue has every reason to promote you to its customers. Our guide to which venues make good run club partners covers what to look for.
The downside: if the manager changes, the relationship sours or the venue closes, you're named after somewhere you no longer go. The safer route is to name the club after the place or the route, then say "we finish at [venue]" in your bio.
What are good run club names for women's groups?
Women's clubs have the strongest naming tradition, and the most crowded one. 136 UK clubs in the directory use women, ladies, girls, sisters or she. The repeat patterns are "sisters" (Dorset Sole Sisters, Solent Running Sisters), "she" (She Runs South Wales), "girls" (Girls Who Run Cardiff, Average Girls Run Club) and the plain descriptive "ladies" (Bridgwater Ladies Running Club).
Popular means shared. Search "Sole Sisters" in the RunClub directory and you'll find ten UK clubs using it, from Ringwood to Barnsley to Barnard Castle. Time of day is the open lane. Only 11 of the 3,876 names use dawn, sunrise, morning, early, night, midnight or moonlight. If your name hangs on a landmark or a loop, map it first with our free running route planner, so the name still fits the run.
How do you check a run club name is free?
Run these checks before you order a single vest.
- Nearby clubs. Type the name, and its key word on its own, into the search on RunClub's club directory. It matches club names as well as towns.
- Instagram and a domain. Check the exact handle. If it's taken, adding your town beats a string of underscores.
- Trade marks. The government's trade mark search shows whether a similar mark is registered. This matters most for venue and brand names.
- Companies House, only if you incorporate. Buddle, the Sport England-supported home of Club Matters, calls the unincorporated association "the most common type of structure for an amateur club". Form a company and company name rules apply.
Planning to affiliate? England Athletics' guidance for new club applications (March 2024) says approval can depend on changing a name the panel finds offensive or too similar to another local club's.
What comes after the name?

What is a good name for a run club?
A good run club name is short enough to say in one breath, includes your town or a local landmark so people can find you, and hints at the atmosphere. Pairing a pun with a place, like Chew Valley Snails, makes a name memorable and searchable at once.
What do you call a group of runners?
In the UK the usual words are club, runners, harriers and striders. Of the 3,876 UK club names we analysed, 1,427 end in Club, 517 in Runners, 172 in Harriers and 161 in AC. Collective, social and society are newer choices, favoured by relaxed, social-first groups.
Can two run clubs have the same name?
Plenty do: ten UK clubs in our directory use Sole Sisters. Sharing a name with a club in another county rarely causes trouble. Sharing one with a club down the road confuses runners, and England Athletics can make affiliation conditional on changing a name that's too similar to a local club's.
Should a run club name be funny?
It can be, if the joke says something true. Self-deprecating names such as Troon Tortoises or Polegate Plodders tell newcomers that slower runners are welcome. Skip in-jokes only the founders get, and anything that will date fast. Add the town so the joke stays findable.
